Parents are an important and vital part of our program. Because the curriculum is personalized to meet the needs of each child, additional adults are present to answer questions, assist in social situations and in general meet any needs that arise.
Parents are required to attend an orientation meeting before school begins each fall to familiarize them with our educational philosophy and classroom procedures.
Beginning Fall 08, parents in the part-time program will be asked to participate at least 3 hours per month. Parents in the full-time program will be asked to participate at least 1 hour per month. This can be done in the classroom (once a month) or outside of the classroom on a committee or cleaning day or any of a variety of other jobs. You will be asked to sign in your hours as they are completed. There will be a $20 monthly charge to
PT families that are unable to meet the 3 hour commitment and a $10 charge to FT families that are unable to meet the 1 hour commitment.
Workdays are a time for the parents to interact with all the children in the class, not just their own child. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your children's friends, the other families, and the teachers and to observe our philosophy in practice. Nannies and other caregivers are welcome to attend our classes and observe, but they may not substitute for regular parental involvement.
In addition to participating in the morning program, each family is asked to work some time outside of the classroom. Parents will sign up at the Required Parent Orientation Meeting for additional committees or jobs. A parent survey will give us an idea of how your talents and hobbies could be included in our program. One parent might teach sign language or French to groups of students, others may attend field trips, run shopping errands, plan social outings , edit the newsletter…..the possibilities are endless!
Parenting classes are offered monthly for a nominal fee by Nora Zelov, a Parenting Coach for Parent Empowerment Coaching and a parent at PVCS. Nora has a combined degree in Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education. Child care is included and spouses attend for free! (See 2008-09 Calendar)
